The tale of two cities is a historical story, one of Dickens long fictions. The background to the novel is the revolution of France .It portrayed a brutal and bloody story , but it also contained love and friendship.
In the novel, Dickens sarcastically described a typical cruel nobleman-marquis of Evermonde . When he was young he and his brother stole a countrywoman by force and killed her family .Whats worse , he used his power to imprison Dr Manette , a kind and honest man who knew all the things they had done and wanted to disclose their crimes . In order to hide their crimes. Marquis of Evermonde and his brother threw Doctor Manette into prison for 18 years . During these 18 years,Doctor Manette lost his freedom and suffer a great in spirit .
I felt unthinkable that Marquis of Evermonde and his brother killed people just as easily as they killed chickens. They deprived other peoples freedom as they liked and they thought it was normal and unremarkable. They had never realized that they had done something wrong or something improper. Because their nature was cruel and evil, like demons. There is an old saying which means: People who commit too many crimes will kill themselves. After all, there is justice in the world. The demons cant be rampant forever. Because the world will not forgive them. They will pay their lives for their crimes. Lets see the consequence of the Marquis,He lay there like a stone with a knife pushed into his heart.” I think it was just what he ought to gain and it is a real exciting scene.
The Marquis death was just the beginning of peoples resistance to the nobleman. Gradually more and more people joined in the revolution. One after another nobleman were sentenced to death and their heads were cut down . However, some innocent people were implicated in the revolution. Charles Darney was one of them He was the nephew of Marquis of Evermonde. To the opposite of his uncle, Darney was a kind and independent young man.
Dickens spoke highly of kindness mercy and love in the novel too. This is the other thone of the novel when Doctor Manette was released from prison. It was his daughter Lucie who took care of him and helped him return to normal. During this time, Dr manette and Lucie knew Charles Darney and Sydeny Carton, the two young man fell in love with Lucie at the same time . At last, Lucie married Chares Darney .Dr Manette accepted Darney as his son-in-law although he knew that Darney was the nephew of the man who threw him into prison for18 years. This is the love between father and daughter. And Sydeny Carton , the very great man ,loved Lucie deeply. He promised Lucie that he would do everything for her happiness. He did it truely ,he sacrificed himself instead of Darney who looked the same as him. This is love for lovers . This is the most wonderful thing in the world. It also reminds us that no matter how no matter when there is true love existing. At the end , Lucie, Dr Manette and Darney arrived in England safely.
The tale of two cities is different from other historical fictions. Its characters and main plots are fictional under the real background of the revolution of France. The author made the experience of the fictional charactor Dr Manette as the main clue. The plots are complicated, and they are flexuous and dramatic. The structure is complete and rigorous.
Dickens had dear love and hate. He praised those who ought to be praised and attacked those who ought to be attacked. The motivation of the novel maybe just warn the English dominators. But I think we can learn something meaningful from the tale of two cities.
“It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times. It was the age of wisdom, and it was the age of foolishness. It was the epoch of belief, and it was the epoch of incredu-lity. It was the season of light, and it was the season of darkness. It was the spring of hope, and it was the winter of despair. We had everything before us, and we had nothing before us. We were all going direct to Heaven, and we were all going direct the other way. In short, the period was so far like the present period. That some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of parison only. ”
With the beginning of above words, Dickens told us a love story called “A Tale of Two Cities”, which is one of his most important representative works. The novel profoundly exposed the society contradiction before the French Revolution, intensely attacks the aristocratic social class is dissolute and cruel, and sincerely sympathizes with the depressed classes. The novel also described many magnificent scenes like the revolt people attacked Bastille and so on, which displayed peoples great strength.
The novel has portrayed many different people. Doctor Manette is honest and kind but suffers the persecution actually , Lucie is beautiful and gentle ,Charles is graceful and noble,Lorry is upright and honest ,Sydney is semblance of indifferent, innermost feelings of warm, unconventional but also selfless and lofty,Miss Pross is straightforward and loyal,Evremonde brothers are cruel and sinister. The plex hatred is hard to solve, the cruel revenge has made more hatreds, loves rebirth in the hell edge, but take the life as the price.
Among many different kinds of people in the story, it is Sydney Carton who impressed me most.
I cant describe my feeling at the first sight of him. To tell the truth, he was not eye-catching at that time. When the readers were immersed in the meeting between Lucie and Charles, he only played a little role as a lawyer who had the same face with Charles and extricated him from accusation through this point.
Then they went to drink. Without scruple, Carton expressed his dislike to Charles. Yes, they had the same face. But they were different. Carton was a little lawyer, while Charles was a successful man. Carton was quite free and easy, while Charles was graceful and noble. In fact, they were absolutely two distinctive men except for their appearance. Certainly, what Carton cared about was not the wealth or the position, but the love of Lucie. He realized that Lucie loved Charles, so he was barely out of control at that time.
Every time I read this part, I could feel his sincerity and broad-minded. By no means would he say a lie. He must tell you what he thinks in the heart. It is Sydney Carton, a true man.
After a short time, he cant resist himself going to see Lucie. But when he stepped into the small forest, he saw Lucie and Charles getting together happily. He didnt rush towards them, however, he returned without a word. Though he had a period of depression after that, he was clear who Lucie loved was not him. So what he only would do was to bless her.
Some days later, he came to meet Lucie again. He still told Lucie about his love, although he knew it was useless. He just wanted her to know it, as he said,“I want you to know that you are my last dream in my life. ”
Many times, love is a thing about only one person. “I love you.”--Its my business, not yours.
So when Carton showed his deep love to Lucie, I suddenly felt that this man was so lovely and deserved to beloved.
“Remember always theres a man who could give his life to you, or anyone you love.” Carton left with these words. But all of these seemed a sign of misfortune.
From then on, I came to understand how profound his love was. No doubt that it is the most moving love words in the world. Although you dont love me, I am still there for you or your beloved though thick and thin.
But I knew in this story, Carton was bound to a tragic role. So when I saw he only left a view of his back in her wedding, there was a plex mood appearing slowly in my heart.
Some years passed. When Lucie appeared in the front of Carton, she became a mother. This time, Lucies face was filled with anxiety. Because Charles was in prison and would be killed soon. What lead to this was the plicated and filthy past.
From the point, the dirty of society was reflected. It was the sorrow in that period. But they must pay for this sorrow. So it was the time that Carton achieved his permission. “I told you once, for you I would do anything. I will. ” He said.
At the last moment, he and Charles exchanged. That they had the same face helped them at the second time. When Lucie and her family left without knowing the truth, Carton, instead of Charles, went to be killed.
How can we evaluate his action? We cant say anything about it because all what he did was out of love.
As he said to the young girl who panied him before died, “If we have no fear, we can be calm all the way.” He was so calm to greet what would be ing soon, for she would get her happiness and he loved her forever.
“It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.” With her face rising before his eyes, he went to execution ground calmly.
It is “A Tale of Two Cities”, also a tale of Sydney Carton.
Holding A Tale of Two Cities in my hand, my heart seems to blend into it, as if I am immersed in it, as if I am living in that era.
Oh, thats really incredible. My heart seems to wander in that turbulent era, shining with wisdom, filled with foolishness, confident times, doubtful times, sunny seasons, dark seasons, hopeful springs, and despairing winters. I feel all of this, warmth and cold, food and hunger, kindness and evil.
A Tale of Two Cities "is the greatest realist critic of 19th century England, Charles. Dickens representative work "A Tale of Two Cities" became vivid and lifelike under his pen, with each character representing every type of person at that time. In the eleventh chapter of the second part, the thriving lawyer Steve Jobs is exposed to the fullest extent: self righteous, arrogant, and scheming that is annoying.
This was a type of person who was despised by others at that time, who was arrogant, conceited, and self satisfied. But in the eyes of people, Sidney was not a big shot and instead gained peoples understanding and respect for his uselessness. We do not become arrogant, self righteous and annoying social scum. As long as we are respected and understood by others, such people can truly stand firm. We will applaud and cheer for goodness to ultimately triumph over evil, and for love to ultimately regenerate on the edge of hell.
We can also deeply experience the bitterness and evil of the lives of the lower classes in England from the laughter and anger of the little character Jerry. People are strongly dissatisfied with this, but we can infect every person who is deceived by evil with our own kindness. Only love can save fate, and only kindness can save evil.
The novel also praises other characters: Dr. Meneth is upright, noble, kind, and tolerant, embodying the ideal of benevolence; Lucy is the embodiment of love and warmth; Darnay is the person who points the way out for the ruling class. The kind of characters displayed. All virtues are passionately praised by Dickens as humanists. The author Dickens is a major representative of 19th-century British realism literature. He is known for his witty humor, meticulous psychological analysis, and the organic combination of realistic descriptions and romantic atmosphere. His book "A Tale of Two Cities" uses the debauchery and brutality of the French aristocracy, the suffering of the masses, and the history of the French Revolution to allude to the social reality of England at that time, foreshadowing that this great fire of mockery and terror will also be staged in France.
I fully agree with what Carden said before his death: "Resurrection is in me, life is in me, whoever believes in me, even if they die, will be resurrected; whoever lives and believes in me will never die." This is the medicine Dickens prescribed for the "worst times," but it is still an ideal. Some people say that as an immortal work, A Tale of Two Cities would have lost its value and glory without the existence and actions of Carden.
Cardens death is like a feather gently falling to the surface of the water, without any splashing, but with ripples. It reminds us that true freedom and equality cannot be established with a guillotine.
We cannot forget the lessons brought to us by "A Tale of Two Cities" because of time. We need to learn something from it. We hope that in two hundred years, we can create a new century of true equality, freedom, and universal love. We hope that the world that Carden saw before his death will be our future world!
A Tale of Two Cities is written by one of the greatest American writers, Charles Dickens. He was born in Plymouth in 1812 and passed away in 1870. He came from a poor background, but after an unfortunate childhood, he quickly became wealthy and successful. He has also written many famous novels, such as "Oliver Twist". Great Expectations and so on.
The Tale of Two Cities mainly records that in 1775, there was a white haired man sitting in a room above a tavern in Paris, who was busy making shoes. He once served as a prisoner in the Bastille for 18 years. Now he is a free man, but he doesnt know his name and doesnt eat his friends. All he knows is that he must continue making shoes.
Sitting on a bus to Paris was Lucie, her daughter whom she had never met before. Lucie brought her father back to London, and with her daughters love and care, he forgot about the past and learned to live like a free man.
However, during the stormy years of the French Revolution, the past has neither disappeared nor been forgotten. So soon the danger secretly brought Lucie and her loved ones back to Paris... where the terrifying death machine - the guillotine - was waiting hungry for the enemies of France.
The protagonist here clearly exposed the darkness and corruption of the society at that time. A man who had been a prisoner for 18 years and remembered nothing, was finally brought back to London by his daughter Lucie whom he had never met before, and began a free life. However, in the end, his daughter and the people she loved returned to the dark Paris and were executed by the enemies of France!
A few days ago, I borrowed a super thick world classic book called "A Tale of Two Cities". After reading a few chapters, I decided to return it. It was really boring and I couldnt understand it. Today, I borrowed its weight loss version and finally finished reading it. There are actually many characters in the book, but their various relationships are so unexpected to me. The protagonist is Dr. Manette, a prisoner who served in the Bastille for 18 years. Her daughter Lucy, her son-in-law Charles
Britain and France are the so-called twin cities, and the background of the novel is the French Revolution. I am studying history, and I am clear about the French Revolution. When it comes to the novel, I really want to ask, is it true? As for novels, they are mostly fictional. After reading them, the impression they give me is: the cruel Mrs. Defarge, the innocent Charles, the speechless Mr. Sidney, the loyal maid Miss Pros, the warm-hearted Mr. Jarvis Laurie
I always have a fondness for good people and a disgust for bad people. Its not surprising, everyone is like this, unless they are super good and have a kind heart towards bad people, or they are super bad and always have a feeling of they are so hypocritical! Actually, this is not surprising, its just the case. A group of hypocritical guys. The Defarge couple went to find Lucy, thinking she was going to help her husband Charles, but in reality, it caused him to be imprisoned again and ultimately led to Mr. Cardens death. I personally think Mr. Carden is very loyal and values emotions. He fell in love with Lucy the first time he met her, and although his confession was rejected, his love for her remained unchanged. In the end, in order for Lucy to reunite with her husband and to stop her from crying and being sad, he went to prison to switch jobs with Charles and exchanged his own life for Lucys happiness. I cannot help but say that he is the person who moved me the most.
"A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens is a profound novel set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. The story vividly portrays the social unrest and the sharp contrast between the rich and the poor.
One of the most touching aspects is the character Sydney Carton. Despite his flaws, Carton sacrifices himself for the love of Lucie. His self - sacrifice is a powerful testament to the strength of human love and redemption. This act not only saves the life of Lucies husband but also redeems his own soul.
The novel also highlights the theme of resurrection. Just as Carton is resurrected in spirit through his sacrifice, the oppressed people in France strive for a new life after the revolution. The description of the revolution is both thrilling and thought - provoking, showing the violence and chaos that can arise when the gap between the classes becomes too wide.
In conclusion, "A Tale of Two Cities" is not just a historical novel but also a profound exploration of human nature, love, and sacrifice. It serves as a reminder that even in the darkest times, hope and love can prevail.
Charles Dickens "A Tale of Two Cities" offers a vivid and complex view of humanity. Set in London and Paris during the French Revolution, the novel exposes the best and worst of human nature.
The characters in the book are diverse. There are the kind - hearted like Lucie Manette, who brings hope and warmth with her love. Then there are the cruel and heartless aristocrats, whose actions fuel the fire of the revolution. The contrast between them is a powerful illustration of the duality of humanity.
The revolution itself is a mirror that reflects the collective humanity of the people. The oppressed masses, driven by years of suffering, rise up with great anger. Their actions, though often violent, are also a cry for justice. On the other hand, the excessive violence during the revolution shows how easily human nature can be corrupted by hatred and revenge.
Sydney Cartons character stands out as a symbol of redemption. His transformation from a dissipated young man to a self - sacrificing hero shows that even the most flawed among us can find the strength to do good. Through his sacrifice, he not only saves a life but also gives meaning to his own existence.
In summary, "A Tale of Two Cities" is a masterpiece that delves deep into the complexities of humanity, leaving readers with much to reflect on.
"A Tale of Two Cities" is a remarkable novel that vividly depicts the French Revolution. Charles Dickens uses the historical event as a backdrop to explore profound themes.
The revolution in the novel is a result of the extreme social inequality. The aristocrats lead a life of luxury while the common people struggle in poverty. This vast gap between the rich and the poor creates a powder - keg situation, and eventually, the revolution erupts.
The description of the revolution shows both its just cause and its tragic consequences. The oppressed masses are fighting for their rights and a better life, which is understandable. However, the revolution also descends into chaos and violence, with innocent people being caught in the cross - fire. The guillotine becomes a symbol of both justice and the excesses of the revolution.
Dickens also shows how the revolution changes people. Some become consumed by hatred and revenge, losing their humanity in the process. Others, like Sydney Carton, find the strength to rise above the chaos and do the right thing.
This novel serves as a warning about the dangers of social inequality and the importance of justice. It makes us realize that while revolutions can bring about change, they also come at a great cost. "A Tale of Two Cities" is not only a historical account but also a powerful commentary on the nature of revolution.

In "A Tale of Two Cities", Charles Dickens masterfully portrays the growth and transformation of his characters.
Lucie Manette, for example, starts as a young and innocent girl. However, as she experiences the hardships of the times, she grows into a strong - willed woman. Her love for her family and friends gives her the strength to face the challenges, and she becomes a pillar of support for those around her.
Sydney Cartons character development is even more remarkable. At first, he appears as a dissipated and cynical young man. But his love for Lucie gradually awakens his better nature. He realizes that he can use his life to bring happiness to others. His ultimate sacrifice is the climax of his growth, as he transforms from a lost soul to a heroic figure.
Charles Darnay also undergoes a significant change. Born into an aristocratic family, he rejects the privileges and cruelty of his class. He chooses to start a new life in England, away from the corruption of the French aristocracy. Through his experiences, he learns the value of hard work and the importance of standing up for what is right.
The growth of these characters not only makes the story more engaging but also serves as an inspiration. "A Tale of Two Cities" is not just a story about historical events but also a story of human growth and redemption.
