Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
People often say “ Those who don’t understand history will repeat the mistakes of the past.” I totally disagree. I don’t see any evidence that people have made smart decisions based on their knowledge of the past. To me, the present is what is important, not the past. I think that people, the weather, and politics determine what happens, not the past.
People can change. We can’t assume that people will continue to hate one another just because they have had hated one another for years. Look at Turkey and Greece. When Turkey had an earthquake, Greece sent aid. When Greece had an earthquake, Turkey sent aid. Now, these two countries are cooperating and looking forward to improved relations. No doubt, if we looked at the past, we could have thought this was a lost cause. But people change.
The weather can change. Farmers think that they can plant certain crops because these crops have always grown well in their fields before. But the weather can change. There can be a long drought. The crops that have always worked well , will die. A drought-resistant crop needs to be tried. If we looked at the past, we would not have changed our crop and we would have lost our farm. Weather changes.
Politics an change. According to my way of thinking, politicians must be responsive to changes in the people. If politicians looked only at the past, they would always say the same thing. People change. On the whole, people today care about human rights. They warn all people to have the equal rights. If we looked at the past in the United States, we would see a lot of discrimination against races, women, and *ual orientation. Now, that is changing. Politicians changes, too.
As a rule what is important today is to follow the mood of the moment. We can’t be looked in the past. It doesn’t do us any good to think about the past. People, the weather, and politics can change in any direction. The direction of this change, in my opinion, can not be predicted by studying the past.

摘要：本文从大家对英语学习的认识和看法这样一个课堂情景导入，结合现今高职高专学生对英语掌握的现状及产生原因进行分析，最后得出结论，学好英语最重要、也是最基本的是学好音标。

一、引言
英语学习的重要性毋庸置疑，职业教育对学生英语学习也提出了注重实际应用能力的高要求，学生需要掌握基础知识，还要了解专业英语，知识内容越来越丰富。为了配合这一需求，这些年来，我们对英语教学的教材及教学方法进行了大量的改革和尝试。但无论英语教材或英语教学法怎样改，有一样是不能变的，那就是音标的学习。换句话说，最基本、也最容易被我们忽视的音标，才是学生能否学好英语的关键。
二、课堂教学情景
每届接到新学生时，我都会问他们一个问题:学英语最重要也是最基本的是学什么?这个问题的设定，一方面可以了解学生这些年来对英语的认识;同时，也想帮助学生重新审视英语学习的关键。
经过讨论得到以下几种观点：
1.词汇量最重要，词汇是语言系统重要的组成部分，所以，也是语言学习的重要内容，只有词汇量积累多了，才算学英语；
2.语法是最基本的，它之所以称为“法”，体现出语法是语言的基本规律，有约束限定的作用，既然是“法”，肯定是重要的；
3.学英语最基本的是口语，语言是用来交流的，谁也不会用语法去交流；
4.还有同学认为公共三级、四级考试对是最基本的；
三、高职高专学生英语学习现状及对其提出的新要求
中国学生学习英语的主要途径是课堂听讲，而传统的英语教学法实际上是“语法翻译教学法”，势必导致了教学手段和过程较为单一，且忽视听说能力的训练;单纯通过对脱离语境的语言材料进行分析，使学生只学会理性的句法分析，不利于培养学生听说方面的交际能力。
上大学后英语学习显得更为重要，学生要过级考试，要掌握一些专业英语，学会阅读外文版专业书籍，还要练习口语交际和写作等。大部分学生，只要肯下功夫，应付等级考试还是没有问题的。
当今社会国际化程度越来越高，对外交流需求逐渐增多，对于全世界使用范围最广的英语，如果学生的学习目标继续停留于应试和拿等级证书肯定是不够的。这就要求他们必须张嘴！但强迫学生张开口后，一个弊端暴露出来:好多学生的口语十分拗口，究其原因，我们大多数的学生并不是来自城市，他们孩提时跟父母学讲的是方言，升入小学、中学才慢慢开始接触普通话，但仍有好多老师用方言来教学。所以，在他们学习外语的过程中，需要从方言转到普通话，再转到外语，这就要比第一习得语言是普通话的城里学生在一开始多走了一步弯路。另外，师资条件也是不可忽视的一个重要原因，好多学生反映，之前老师们说出来的英语，也带着浓厚的乡音。导致学生们总觉得考试中最难的就是听力，其实听力不好，不是我们听得不多，单词记得不多，而是自己说出来的英语有问题。这个问题完全印证了李阳老师说过的话，说河南英语就只能听懂河南英语，说新疆英语就只能听懂新疆英语，说纯正的美式英文，就一定能听懂美国英文。
四、打好音标基础才是学好英语的基本条件
这个道理其实很简单，音标对于英语学习的重要性就相当于汉语拼音对于学习中文的重要性。回想我们在学习母语的时候，最初学习的就是拼音，如果没有拼音作指导，汉字对我们来说可能也只是一种符号，根本无法拼读。同样，如果没有国际音标，英语单词对我们来说更是外国人的符号，我们不认识，没法读，那单词的作用也要被颠覆了。
但为什么作为母语的拼音我们都学了，但我的大部分学生却说从小根本没有接受过作为第二语言的基础——国际音标的正规学习呢?其实，小学初中的教科书中都有关于国际音标的要求和拼读练习，但在大多数学校都被无情的忽视了，因为关于音标的考核几乎没有。记得小学刚开始接触英语时用的学习方法，现在想起来极为荒唐，例如，用拼音，甚至用汉字来标注发音。其实，学生们也不喜欢用这些不标准的方法学习，可有谁教过标准的方法?又有谁告诉学生还有音标这样一个约束?为什么一开始学英语就是What’sthis?
What’sthat?It’sacake，而不是国际音标呢?从长远的角度来说这是对学生的不负责任，英语教学的失误。导致一大批学生在小学或初中阶段因没有打好基础而产生了对英语的厌恶和恐惧。经过十几年这样的学习，怎么可能在大学期间就把英语补回来呢?
而如果先学好音标，情况就能大有改观：
学好音标，首先可以提高英语发音的准确性。发音是最直观的评价我们英语水平高低的标准，而好的发音反过来在语音、语调、语速等方面都会起到很好的`促进作用。
学好音标，还可以让我们告别先前以读、写为主的哑巴英语。规范了发音，掌握了地道的口语，自信心自然提高，不必再担心说出来的英文会招人笑，口难开了。
学好音标，某种程度上来说，对积累词汇起着决定性作用。学生看到一个陌生的单词，通过音标就能准确拼读，从而达到有效的记忆单词，慢慢产生学英语的兴趣，这才是必经之路。反过来说，拼写单词有的时候提笔就忘，我们也可以利用正确的发音自己恢复单词的拼写。那我们的词汇量也在这一正一反中得到很好的积累了。
学好音标，英语的自学能力也在此过程中随之提高了。
综上所述，学好英语最基本的就是打好语音基础，无论我们的英语教学采用哪种模式，对于我们生活在非英语环境下的学生来说，牢固掌握英语最基本的音素——音标，打好扎实的基础，才是学好英语最科学、合理、有效的途径。

学习新概念的重要性
《新概念英语》由英国著名的语言教育专家L.G.Alexander先生编写，历经半个多世纪而经久不衰，因为它可以帮助学习者在比较短的时间内全方位地提高自身的听说读写译五方面的素质。
第一部分，听力。大家完全可以把《新概念英语》当成是一套很好的听力教材，对听力有很大的帮助。
第二部分，词汇。新概念教材课文里所学习的单词都是最基本、最常用的词汇，所以大家一定要掌握。

最重要的是要“听读结合”。
“听”不是单纯的听一两次就够了，而是分泛听和精听。
泛听就是大致的听，这个主要是用于提升语感，比如说你可以一边吃饭或一边做别的事情一边听，不需要很刻意，能捕捉到几个单词就是几个单词。连续听几个月之后，你的听力和英语水平都会渐渐提高。有童鞋要问：那听烦了该怎么办呢？所以说在选择听力材料上一定要选择自己喜欢的素材，如喜欢的电影或美剧英剧（小编当年选的就是《绯闻女孩》），然后反复听，而且不用专门听，哪怕你做事情当作背景音都是可以呢！
精听是仔细的听，一句话一听，这个主要是练习模仿。选择一种发音方式，一字一句模仿。
另外一个就是读。你可以一个人关在小黑屋里随心所欲的读，也可以面向大庭广众，大声的读，但一定要出声，否则自己都听不到自己的声音，还指望和别人用英文流利对话！还可以一边读一边录，然后听自己的录音，从而判断自己读的究竟离原版有多远。
一直不鼓励别人死记硬背，因为背诵就如同任务一般，剥夺了英语学习的兴趣。但是如果你多听多读，一篇文章反复听反复读，不需要背诵，自然而然，你就记下来了。

一直以来，大部分学生在学校里接受的英语学习都是以应试为主，为了应付各种以笔试为主的英语考试，在多年的英语学习过程中，老师给学生教授更多的是词汇和语法方面的知识，能运用英语流畅地进行交流的学生人数并不是很多。“哑巴”英语已经越来越成为学习英语最大的障碍。
说到底，英语口语是一种技能，尤其是依照当前经济的发展趋势，我国与国际的交流越来越紧密，学习实用的口语知识，可以应对工作、商务、出国等方面遇到的问题。
从母语习得的过程来看，幼儿、小孩的语言学习与运用是不需要专门学习那些经专家总结的并具有严重割裂性质的语法的。如有理想的语言环境，少儿学习外语也是毋须专门学习语法的。
由于国人学习外语过于重视语法而导致聋子英语、哑巴英语等现象，语法学习更是受到了无以复加的攻击。我也极端反对过于以分裂的方式学习语法，平时带自己小孩学习英语时也是以听、说(含背)、阅读为主，但我也承认，我还是避免不了要夹杂着教他点语法。对此，我只能这样说：这完全是被语言环境所逼、迫不得已的拙劣辅助方法。
只能再说一下：不管是少儿还是成年人学习外语，当然要以听、说(含背)、阅读、写为主，必须抛弃割裂活生生语言、以语法和做练习为主的'拙劣学习方式。与此同时，语法学习方式虽然受到激烈的抨击，但由于语言环境的严重不足，适当的语法讲解与学习是必不可少的。
君不见，好多在国外学习、生活多年甚至一二十年的国人，初接触，因为他们能讲一些很地道的口语且语音语调颇具什么伦敦腔或纽约腔，我们会错误地认为他们的英语很棒。其实，这是十足的假象。一旦轮到要写作，或在正式的舞台上进行英语谈判、辩论时，他们脆弱的英语基础就暴露无遗。
语法到底重不重要呢?
如果说你不参加任何笔试类的考试的话，语法对你来说，也许不重要，而对于口语来讲语法到底中不重要呢?我可以这样讲，不能说不重要，也不能说重要，是不是太模棱两可了，我说不重要的原因是，按照传统教育的陋习，如果我们太精通语法的话，就会一说话的时候，就会想语法和单词，必须让每句话都符合语法的规则，于是半天才会说出一句话，我在大学的导师，专业八级，词汇量成山，可是一说英语的时候，就需要考虑半天，因为太精通语法了，说出的英语实在很别扭，和精读课本里的文章差不多，实在难以接受，这就是我们太精通语法所造成的现象。
而我说重要的原因是什么呢?
美国人讲话中并不是每句话都不符合语法规则的，你可以看英文电影的时候，换成英文字幕来看，你就会发现，70%以上的对话句子，完全符合我们所掌握的语法，就像现在完成时和现在完成进行时，表达的思想绝对是不一样的，这两个时态是老美最常用的时态，我在刚开始自学的时候，和老外说出的句子，几乎都是病句，纯粹是用单词连在一块的，根本不存在任何句式、时态、和动词词性的变化，可以说是一塌糊涂，因为，我看过一篇文章，是一位大师讲过的话，叫做胡说英语，他主张不用懂任何语法，就把单词放在一起，就可以讲英语了，其实，这绝对是谬论，那样的英语句子，把老外都能搞疯了，因为纯属是胡编乱造，我在当地开了两年的培训班，刚开始时，只会点口语，不懂语法，而我们这里偏偏重视应试教育，结果可想而知，学生成绩太差了，口语、听力倒是不错。
结果后来30月一个月都没有人学了，后来我钻研了历年的高考模拟试题和真题，彻底地进行了研究，没想到语法如此简单，几个月就彻底掌握了，这回我的学生就源源不断了，因为我保证他们高考120分，无效全额退款，而且一个人收费20xx元，培训时间一年，周六1个半小时，周日一个半小时，全年都是周六、周日培训，这样，我就可以在平时进行网络培训了，对于，我掌握语法后，再讲出的口语，就没有语法错误了，十分正确，再也不会像以前讲出那种胡编乱造的口语了，通过看了N编的老友记，我的口语既自然，地道、也符合语法规则，所以说，掌握语法很重要，就怕你掌握语法后，一说话的时候，就按照语法规则来构思句子，那就糟糕了，我传授学员的语法能力，是活学活用的，说英语的时候是绝对不需要考虑语法的，而且还是绝对符合语法规则的，这叫做“活语法”

内容提要:语法作为语言的三要素之一，所以英语语法的学习在整个英语学习过程中显得非常重要。同理语法教学虽不应在英语教学中占主导地位，但也不是可有可无。目前，随着新课改目标的变化，部分英语学者认为学习语法无关紧要了。所以在当前的英语教学过程中，语法教学处于不受重视，甚至是轻视的地位。其实英语教学的交际化以及英语教学的新课改并不排斥语法教学。然而在语法教学中，存在着两种走极端的不良倾向：一种是过分强调语法的作用，另外一种是轻视语法对语言运用的指导作用。本文针对这两种现象进行其探究，试图分析其成因，并提出相应的对策。

什么是英语语法
在这里我们首先要明确什么是真正意义上的语法？何谓“语法”？《牛津高级英汉词典》的解释是：“Grammar—rules for forming words and combining them into sentences．”正因为语法揭示了词形变化和遣词造句的规律。语法是研究词性变化和句子结构的科学。语法，词汇，语音是构成语言的三大要素。语法是语言结构系统的一个方面，对语言实践有着积极的指导作用。它具有抽象性、生成性、稳定性三个基本特点。
为什么要学习英语语法
从中国学生学习英语的环境来看，必须学语法。因为在缺乏语言环境下学习英语，只有掌握系统的基础知识和语法结构，规范我们的口语，提高获取英语信息的能力，这样就能才能事半功倍，达到真正提高英语学习的效率，增强运用英语进行交际的准确性，从而更好地吻合新课改的教学目标，即增强实际语言的应用能力。
从培养学生英语交际能力角度来看，必须教语法。语法知识是交际能力不可缺的一种语言形式，语法能力是交际能力的支持系统，用交际教学法意味着教学生使用目的语完成交际任务，交际能力的开展帮助学习者验证目的语的语法假设，巩固语法知识。反之，对语言形式的正确把握将促进交际能力的提高。语言学家认为，语法是语言发生作用的框架；没有语法，人们公认的交流思想形式就没有一致性，就无法组织语言，人们也就无法进行交流。实践性强的语言知识，
特别是语法知识，可使学生越学越明白，越学越容易，越学越轻松，从而能激发学生深层的'、持久的学习兴趣从语法的性质看，语法是语言赖以形成和发展的要素，是掌握语言的必用工具。语法能力是交际能力的有效途径和保证，同时，交际能力又是语法能力的实践和最终目的。社会语言学家海默斯认为，交际能力不仅包括语言形式的正确、语言的可接受性，还必须考虑语言是否恰当。英语教学法专家魏多逊指出，一个语法正确的句子如果使用场合不正确依旧不能达到交际的目的。教学实践表明，没有较好的语法基本功，难以培养学生进行交际的能力。由此可见，语言能力并不是交际能力，而交际能力却理所当然包括语言能力。没有语言能力作基础，交际能力就会成为无本之木；不依靠语法学习语言就会事倍功半，语言学习便成无源之水。
从学生学习英语的目的来看，必须学好语法。在英语阅读过程中，语法是一块能帮助学生正确理解的敲门砖。语法教学的目的不只是为了学生掌握语法，更重要的是让他们获得学好英语的工具。具备一定的语法能力可以更有效地提高学生的英语书面表达能力，进而提高口头表达能。所以①语法知识的掌握程度的高低是直接影响英语阅读速度和质量的一个关键因素。②语法知识更是英语写作的重要技巧之一：在很大程度上，英语语法的正确性是评价一篇英语文章水平的高低的一个重要评判标准。③语法知识是英语口语准确、流利的一个指南针。学生要想用英语表达个人的意图，必须掌握一定量的词汇和句型。
